Listen To The First Chapter Of The Hunger Games Prequel Novel

Fans can now listen to a sneak peek of the new Hunger Games prequel novel, “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” ahead of its release next week on Tuesday, May 19th.

Entertainment Weekly has exclusively released the first chapter of the highly-anticipated novel, which runs 11 minutes in audiobook form. Written by the original trilogy author Suzanne Collins, the prequel novel focuses on President Snow and the events around the 10th annual Hunger Games set 64 years prior to the original movie.

The novel is currently available for pre-order on Amazon where it’s already a no. 1 bestseller. According to a synopsis provided on the site, the book will follow an 18-year-old President Snow who is preparing for his “one shot at glory” as a mentor in the Hunger Games:

“It is the morning of the reaping that will kick off the tenth annual Hunger Games. In the Capitol, eighteen-year-old Coriolanus Snow is preparing for his one shot at glory as a mentor in the Games. The once-mighty house of Snow has fallen on hard times, its fate hanging on the slender chance that Coriolanus will be able to outcharm, outwit, and outmaneuver his fellow students to mentor the winning tribute.

The odds are against him. He’s been given the humiliating assignment of mentoring the female tribute from District 12, the lowest of the low. Their fates are now completely intertwined — every choice Coriolanus makes could lead to favor or failure, triumph or ruin. Inside the arena, it will be a fight to the death. Outside the arena, Coriolanus starts to feel for his doomed tribute . . . and must weigh his need to follow the rules against his desire to survive no matter what it takes.”

Lionsgate, the studio behind the first three “Hunger Games” film adaptations starring Jennifer Lawrence, has already secured the film rights for the prequel novel according to The Hollywood Reporter.
